This woman has a great variety of workouts and she's too cute for words.
These workouts are not for the faint of heart. Caroline will kick your ass with a smile.

This woman means business. I keep going back to this well of challenging workouts.
I saved the best for last. I really love the low impact cardio workouts here. The married hosts make me laugh and smile while getting in great shape.
I started training for my half marathon in March, when it was still cold outside and dark in the mornings when I got up to run. It was also the beginning of my training, when I had to only do a few miles. As with all training programs, the mileage increased gradually, as the temperature also crept up and the sun started to appear earlier.
I’ve never run more than 5 miles in my life and I wasn’t sure that at age 50 it would be possible. Sure, I work out every day to my beloved YouTube videos, but that’s different than pounding the pavement outside in all sorts of weather. Still, I signed up for it, and I was determined to do it. Just believe in the program and push yourself, I thought.
By week 12 I was doing 10 miles in the heat. There were some days that I thought I would die and I thought about giving up and walking. But I never did. I just kept thinking that I had it in me to do all the whole run. Turns out I did.
The half marathon was scheduled for June 30th as it was supposed to kick off the Fourth of July holiday in Bristol, RI - America’s most patriotic town. Christmas has nothing on the Fourth of July in Bristol. There are concerts, carnivals, endless parties and BBQs, fireworks and of course the big Fourth of July Parade which lasts over four hours and people camp out for days to get a good spot.
Due to COVID-19, many of these activities are cancelled, and my event was switched to a “virtual” half marathon. Great, now I have to do this alone. No clapping, no finish line, no water stations, no porta-potties for those mid-run emergencies.
It was all up to me.
I decided to get my run done earlier so I could stop spending my weekends training and get it done before the weather became impossibly humid and oppressive. I chose a Thursday morning, woke up at 5:30 AM, and headed to Providence to the East Bay Bike Path. This is a scenic route along the water that starts in Providence and goes all the way to Newport. As the name says, there are plenty of bikers but also lots of runners and walkers, even a few roller bladers (that’s still a thing??!!).
I was nervous. I had my phone and my carefully curated Spotify playlist. I had no water to bring and my stomach was too jumpy to eat. But I felt good. You can do this, I kept telling myself. I started the run and was determined that nothing was going to stop me from finishing.
It was a cloudy day and it was still early enough to be comfortable. The bike path was nearly empty. I knew I had to pace myself, relax, take in the scenery, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
The first half felt awesome. I could not believe the beauty surrounding me, and the path was flat. I got into a good rhythm and even found myself smiling at times. I just kept thinking, you can do this. You’re doing great.
When it was time to turn around at the 6.5 mile mark and head back to Providence, the bike path was more crowded and I was sure my face was looking bright red. I could tell by the time that I was slowing down a little, but I just kept going. Even though I had already seen the same picturesque vistas of the bay, beautiful greenery and adorable cottages, they looked different and more charming on the way back.
I felt a bit achy and sweaty but I knew I could keep going. I said hello to people I passed. I kept thinking that with each step closer I was almost there.
The last mile felt amazing. I picked up my speed as I recognized where I was and knew victory was in sight. I now knew beyond a shadow of a doubt - I can, in fact, do this. I was going to finish, and in a respectable time.
When my running app said, “Congratulations, workout complete” I was thrilled. I ran several more steps until my car was in sight, then I stopped to walk. I was alone yet I felt victorious. I had run my first (and possibly my last) half marathon. I had accomplished something pretty amazing.
When I got home, my son came running out to greet me. He was happy for me and offered to carry my stuff in from the car. He said, “Mom, just relax now and let me do everything for you. I’m so proud of you!”
That felt better than anything.
For many of us, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The country is starting to open up again, and although it will be slow, careful and (hopefully) smart, there is hope that things will start to return to normal. Or the “new normal” as I keep hearing!
I saw a funny video where a man said he hoped the vaccine was delayed a bit so he could lose the “quarantine weight.” Of course it was just a joke but as we all begin to emerge from our cocoons, that is actually a legit concern. While I’ve been working out steadily and trying to eat healthy during this time, I admit to allowing myself a few extra treats here and there, as well as that “maybe just a splash more” refilling of the wine glass in the evening hours.
The good news is that it’s never too late to make changes. Step One: Forgive yourself and forget about yesterday. Step Two: Start today. Start RIGHT NOW.
With the warmer weather comes the luxury of being active outdoors. Several months ago I signed up for a half marathon, something I’ve never done before. I’ve always been a runner but it’s more of a 3 mile thing on Saturday mornings. If I feel like it.
The thought of 13.1 miles is quite daunting. So I’m doing what seems logical - I downloaded a training app, aptly named “13.One.”
This thing is the best. It has a full training plan that started in March and takes me all the way to Race Day, which is the end of June. I realize the race might actually get cancelled, or postponed, or be a “virtual” race, but I’m committed to sticking to it no matter what.
Each morning I check the app and see what my plan is. It really holds me accountable and I haven’t missed a workout yet. It starts low and gradually builds up the mileage, with a mix of running and walking so you can ramp up the right way and not feel burnt out or defeated. Right now I’m up to 6 miles, which is the farthest I’ve run since college. I’m halfway to my half marathon and I feel great.
If you’re feeling like you could use some movement, I recommend being like the app. Start small. Download an app for walking, or print out a training plan. Here’s a great one: https://www.verywellfit.com/10k-walk-training-schedule-for-beginners-3435037
One step at a time (literally). See you on the road!
Half Marathon, here I come!
Every day I sit on my sun porch and soak up the warmth with a good book. It’s a simple pleasure I’ll keep doing forever.
Planning recipes with my husband and son and trying new foods has left us feeling satisfied in more ways than one.
Never before has something so easy been so enjoyable, soothing, energizing and necessary!
I dare you to find better workouts for FREE.
I learned that people need help more than ever, and donating a small sum each week that is matched by my company fills my heart with joy and pride.
I’m spending less money and more time with my family, calling my mother way more often, appreciating a nice day, feeling grateful for my health, feeling awed by the kindness of people, and not thinking twice about my hair, wardrobe or make-up.
OK, this isn’t really a healthy habit but DAMN, I’ve gotten good at it.
Did you know that one of the keys to happiness is a 20 minute walk in nature every day? Now is the perfect time to start this healthy habit. Take a break from the news, work, laundry, (your kids), and get moving in the fresh air. OK, you can take the dog. You might need someone to talk to.
You know how earlier I spoke about the inconvenient truth about exercise? To get the results you likely desire, you have to put in the work you may or may not be excited about. For me, working out first thing in the morning is my jam. There’s never a good excuse not to get it done right away (although trust me, there are still plenty of excuses!).
But get up and go to the gym? Not my thing. I would have to get up waaaaay too early to actually get dressed, get in my car, drive to the nearest gym, deal with other people, blink in the bright lights, get home, and start getting ready for work.
About five years ago, I discovered YouTube workouts and I’ve never looked back. For me, it’s convenient, it has great variety, it offers real results, it's private, it's personalized, and it’s FREE. Some gyms may offer some of these things, but certainly not all of them. Let me explain.
I created a home workout space in my basement that consists of the following: a laptop computer, a workout mat, and a set of hand weights. That is literally all you need to get the best workouts of your life. Over time, you can add to your collection - kettle bells, resistance bands, etc.
This is a great mat for working out on hard surfaces: https://amzn.to/37Rt1ES
YouTube offers an endless variety of workout videos from tons of personalities. It’s as simple as typing in what you’d like to do, e.g., “10 minute butt workout” and voila! A large catalog appears. Once you find stuff you like, you can subscribe to their channels, you can create playlists of different workouts. The options are plentiful, and they are legit.
Five years in, I’m never bored, I’m in great shape, and I’m never joining a gym again.

Remember when you were a teenager and your mother would wake you up early for school and it sucked? I hated getting out of bed in the morning. I was sleepy and my bed was warm and comfortable, and I just didn’t feel ready.
But I had to do it. I would tell myself that I could come home from school and take a nap, and that was my motivation for getting out of bed. Of course, once I was up and out in my exciting world of school, friends and sports, I never took that nap. I was too busy living and enjoying life.
I’m an adult now and I have to get up early for work. I’m never not jolted from a nice sound sleep every morning when that alarm goes off. I still just want to stay in bed. But I never hit snooze. I just get up. Many times I have to force myself. Whoever thought of that Nike slogan “Just Do It” was a genius, like Thomas Edison, or the person who invented the Tide Stick.
My motivation for getting up now is working out. Yep, I’ve become one of those annoying morning workout people. It started when I worked from home and didn’t have to rush out of the house to get to an office. That’s since changed but I decided to stick to my routine, even if it means I have to get up extra early, which I do. If you want results, you have to put in the work. It's an inconvenient truth.
Working out every morning gives me energy and focus. I feel great and it makes me happy. I know that no matter how the rest of my day goes, I’ve already done something good for myself and no one can take that away. Best of all, I see and feel results.
I will never love getting up early, especially in the winter when it’s cold and still dark. The alarm goes off and my mother is no longer here to tell me to get up. So I tell myself. JUST DO IT.
One of the easiest ways to get your Natural Glamour on is to spritz a little perfume. Some women say they don’t feel fully dressed without their mascara, or their favorite lipstick. I don’t mind stepping out completely bare-faced as long as I’m wearing a lovely scent.
I’m not sure why but I love it when someone tells me I smell good. I guess because the opposite - smelling badly - feels so unwanted. It’s the easiest form of compliment to cultivate.
Of course, perfume is a highly subjective thing. Some perfumes smell really awful to me, especially those that seem heavy and musky. I prefer a light, fresh scent that's not overpowering. And I prefer a gentle hand - please don’t marinate yourself. Scent should be an intimate experience shared between two people, not an entire room.
I like matching my perfumes with the seasons. In Summer, I like a citrus-based scent. In Spring, I prefer a “greener” one. For Fall and Winter, I like earthy, rich scents. My go-to Winter perfume is Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt. It feels like Winter in the best way. Think cuddling under a blanket in front of a roaring fireplace on a cold, snowy night. Yeah, it's like that.
It’s not cheap but no quality perfumes are. I can’t afford the big bottle, but I find the 1 ounce size is pricey but still affordable. It lasts me all season. Try for yourself if you’d like and get ready to impress.
Remember - less is more! Well, at least when it comes to perfume.
